Change to a different RIMMF data folder

If you ever want to see a file of RIMMF records from someone else, or just create a separate file of your own (for some reason), you can, temporarily, change the data folder that RIMMF accesses to the folder of your choice. This way, you can maintain as many folders of RIMMF data as you want; just remember that you cannot link across these folders, so if you want to link to a record in one folder, from another folder, you must bring the record into the folder where you want the link to be made.

Open another folder

To return to your default data folder or open another data folder, you must exit RIMMF and re-open it. Once you exit RIMMF, the program will default to opening the folder named 'data' the next time you open RIMMF. So if you want to open another special folder, you will have to go through the Change data folder steps again. And, if you want to make a new a folder your default folder you will need to rename it as 'data'.

Limitations

There are a few limitations in the current version.

1. RIMMF only supports one data folder at a time.

If you switch to a different data folder, and begin to create records in that folder, you will find that:

2. Even if you install RIMMF twice on the same computer, you will still have only one default data folder

This is because RIMMF looks for My Documents\RIMMF when it starts, and if it finds it, that becomes its default location for all operations1)

1)
the only conceivable reason for installing RIMMF more than once on the same computer would be to preserve different sets of the default element tables that we distribute
