Installation Options

There are two options for installing/using RIMMF. Both of these options require the Windows1) operating system. See our FAQ page for advice on using other operating systems.

The first option, referred to as the 'Standard installation' below, is to let Windows install the program. This method adds an icon for the program to the desktop, and saves all data to the location defined as your My Documents folder2). During the installation process this method requires access to administrative privileges on the computer.

The second option, referred to as the 'Flash drive installation', is to unzip the RIMMF files onto a USB flash drive, or memory card, or cloud drive (yes, like Dropbox), or any other storage area on your computer over which you have control3), and then run the program from that location. In this case, both program files and user data will be saved to the install folder. Unlike a standard installation, this option does not require access to administrative privileges on the computer at any time.

Note: regardless of which installation mode is used, RIMMF does not use the windows registry.

Which one should I use?
Is portability an issue for you? If so, use the 'flash drive' installer, since you can then take RIMMF with you wherever you go. Or just login to your cloud storage and run it from there.

If performance is an issue, then use the standard installer.

Finally, choose whatever method allows you to update the software. If you have Admin rights, use the first one; if you do not have Admin rights, use the second one.

Note: It is possible (in RIMMF2, and RIMMF3, but not RIMMF1) to use both installation types on the same machine; RIMMF will use the data and tables appropriate to the scenario in which the app is launched.

Download

Standard installation

  1. Close RIMMF if it is running
  2. Save the file (setupRimmf3.exe) to your desktop (or another easy-to-remember location)
  3. When the download completes, double-click on the file 'setupRimmf3.exe'
  4. Respond to all prompts in the installation dialog
  5. To start the program, double-click on the desktop icon

Flash drive installation

  1. Close RIMMF if it is running
  2. Click this link: Link to the zip installer
  3. “Save As” the file (setupRimmf3.zip) to your flash drive/memory card/cloud drive
  4. When the download completes, extract the zip folder:
    1. Right-click on the file setupRimmf3.zip
    2. Select the option 'Extract to “setupRimmf3\”'
    3. Open the folder “setupRimmf3”
  5. To start the program, double-click on the app 'rimmf3'
  6. To add a desktop icon, right-click on the app 'rimmf3.exe' and select 'Send to desktop'

Once the program is installed, the first time you open it, you will have to setup a record identifier prefix;
then you will be ready to start rimmfing resources.

Here is some more info on using RIMMF for the first time.

Updating

Here are a few thing to keep in mind if RIMMF is already installed, and you are updating your version of the program. If you have anything you want to save (other than records, which will not be affected by updates), backup your current RIMMF installation (eg., for a standard install, make a copy of My Documents\RIMMF3; for a zip install, make a copy of the installation folder).

If you are using the 'Standard installation', simply follow the 'Standard installation' steps above.

If you are using the Flash drive installation', use these steps to update:

  1. Download the zip installer as per the instructions above
    1. replace the existing zip file
  2. Extract the program to the same folder as you originally did
    1. replace ALL existing files

Either way, records, templates, or table customizations will not be changed or deleted.

Compatibility with RIMMF1 and RIMMF2

RIMMF1, RIMMF2 and RIMMF3 can be installed on the same computer. All three versions of the program may be used without impacting the other in any way.

However, please note these limitations:

  1. You may run RIMMF1, RIMMF2 and RIMMF3 at the same time, but only one copy of each version of RIMMF should be running at a given time
  2. RIMMF1 records can be loaded into RIMMF2 (RIMMF2 is able to autoconvert RIMMF1 records)
  3. RIMMF2 records can be imported into RIMMF3
  4. RIMMF2 records will not load in RIMMF1
  5. RIMMF3 records will not load in RIMMF2 or RIMMF1

Note that RIMMF1 folder names are simply named 'RIMMF'; whereas RIMMF2 folder names will be named 'RIMMF2' and RIMMF3 folder names will be named 'RIMMF3'. This note applies to both My Documents and Program Files.

Windows 8

We have had several reports that RIMMF does not work on Windows 84).

The common symptom is this: the first time the program runs, a number of errors appear that say something like

copyFile failed: [followed by a long path here]

After those messages are dismissed, they are followed by a message like the following:

This message is a result of the previous 'copyFile' failure: RIMMF did not find the file it needs to create the dataset (because the attempt to copy the file(s) failed).

The workaround is (after you manage to close the unhappy RIMMF app) to manually copy the files that RIMMF needs the first time it starts.

First, go to the installation folder and locate the folder containing the default tables. In a standard install, it will be something like

C:\Program Files (x86)\TMQ\RIMMF3\defaults\tables

Copy all of the files in this 'tables' folder to the 'tables' folder in your personal directory. In a standard install, this 'personal' directory will be something like

C:\users\[yourname]\documents\RIMMF3\tables

If prompted, replace any file that might already be present.

Start RIMMF and you should be good to go.

Note: if you are using the portable, or 'flash drive' installation, check here to locate the two folders described above.

1)
Windows is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and other countries
2)
which, in many institutionalized environments, is located on a network drive
3)
including your My Documents folder
4)
This is problematic, because, as developers we try to stay away from non-Pro versions of Windows (because software often doesn't work correctly on them); on the other hand, Windows 8 was installed on many, many millions of laptops
