Detailed Steps
Sometimes you might need to add data for an element that does not appear in an existing record, or you might need to add an element to a template so that it will always appear when that template is used.
To add an element to either a record or a template:
- Put your cursor on the element label that is directly above or below where you want your new element to be inserted (if you wish to add an element that is a sub-property, go **here** instead)
- If you wish to insert the element above the element you have selected:
- Press the <Insert> key; or
- Right-click on the element options column for the element and choose 'Insert Any'
- If you wish to insert the element below the element you have selected:
- Press the <F4> key; or
- Right-click on the element options column for the element and choose 'Append'
- In the resulting empty element box
- Click on the empty Element Label box, and:
- either use the down arrow that appears on the right of the cell to see a list of viable element names, and select your choice of name
- or start typing the name of the element and hit <Enter> when you are satisfied with the selection
- Press <Tab> to complete the selection
You can always move the element after you insert it, if you wish)
If you only need an added element for the record that you are in, add that element to the record.
If you would like an added element to always appear for a particular type of record, then add that element to a template; the added element will always appear whenever that template is accessed.
Something to watch out for with <F4>
Pay attention to the branches of the tree list when inserting elements.
For example, if the cursor is on 'Title of the Work' and you press <F4>
the new element is added above 'Identifier for the Work' (i.e., at the same level as 'Title of the Work', or as a property of the 'Work' entity).
TO get a better insight of how this works, close-up the subProperties of the Title (by clicking on the [-] box), out the cursor on 'Title of the Work', and press <F4>.
On the other hand, if your cursor is on 'Variant Title for the Work' and you press <F4>, the new element will be added at the same level as 'Variant Title', i.e. as a subProperty of 'Title of the Work'–which might not be what you want.
