Practice Build WEM

Follow these steps to quickly and easily create Work, Expression, and Manifestation records for a new resource.

Open a new record for a Manifestation, using the Template titled 'TMQ.Book.Pub.Simple' (see Main Menu: File Menu: New Record)

In your blank Manifestation record, enter the following identifying data from the resource:

• Title Proper (transcribed from title page):

The top one hundred pasta sauces

• Other Title Information (transcribed from title page):

authentic regional recipes from Italy

• Variant Title:

The top 100 pasta sauces

• Copy the ‘Statement of Responsibility Relating to Title Proper’ element so that you can add a second statement (<F2> or see Copy an Element)

• Statement of Responsibility Relating to Title Proper (transcribed from title page):

Then enter the following carrier data from evidence provided by the resource:

• Media Type: 'unmediated' is already provided for you, because you are using the 'Simple' book template; click on the down arrow by the side of the Text box to see the other option in the vocab for this element

• Carrier Type: 'volume' is already provided for you, because you are using the 'Simple' book template; click on the down arrow by the side of the Text box to see the other option in the vocab for this element

• Number of units (recorded as the number of pages):

• Type of Unit (Text): 'pages' is already provided for you, because you are using the 'Simple' book template; click on the down arrow on the right side of the Text box to see the other option in the vocab for this element

• Dimensions (recorded as the height of the book) 'cm' is already provided for you, because you are using the 'Simple' book template, but add the number:

Then enter the following Metadata about the data:

• Composite Key: click on the Text Box (or <Enter> past it) to autofil it from the default identifying and carrier elements (learn about Autofills in RIMMF, if you want to know more)

Then enter the following relationship data for the Manifestation and go on from there to other related Work and Expression entity data:

• Create and Link to a new Work Record:
  • Go to Expression Manifested: Right-click on the Text box (or <F5>)
  • Choose 'Create New Work'
  • Choose the template titled 'TMQ.aSimple'

• Enter attribute data for the Work:
  • Preferred Title for the Work: 'The top one hundred pasta sauces' is already filled out for you, copied from the Title Proper of the Manifestation; take my word for it (for the purpose of this demo) that the UK version did not have a different title and there is no earlier version with a different title, so this title is the Preferred Title; but:

Remove the initial article and capitalize the new first word

• Variant Title for the Work: 'The top 100 pasta sauces' is already filled out for you, copied from the Variant Title of the Manifestation; but:

Remove the initial article and capitalize the new first word

• Date of Work: '1987' is already filled out for you from the Date of Publication of the manifestation; there is no earlier, different, version of this work (I did the research), so this is the correct date for this element

• Add a link to a record for the author as ‘Creator’:
  • Go to the Text box for Creator:
    • with your cursor in the text box, <F3> to find ‘Seed, Diane’ in the [NAF] Name (Search for data outside RIMMF)
    • Import the record for Diane and Add it
    • Notice that the back-link to the Work has been added using the inverse relationship label 'Creator Of'
    • Close Diane’s record, and notice that the link to her record has been inserted into the text box from which you began (Creator)
    • Change the Creator element to its sub-element 'Author'
      • Click on the Element Label for 'Creator'
      • Choose 'Author'
      • Double-click on the link to Diane's record
        • Notice that the inverse relationship label has been changed to 'Author Of'
• Close the person record

• Update the Authorized Access Point (AAP) for this Work:
  • Go to Metadata About Work Data | Authorized Access Point
  • click on the Text Box to update the AAP with the default identifying elements (learn about Autofills in RIMMF, if you want to know more)

• Variant Access Points are filled in for you, from the:
  • Preferred Title for the Work without Creator
  • Creator and Variant Title for the Work
  • Variant Title for the Work without Creator

• Status of Identification: choose from the closed vocabulary (see Choose Data from a Vocabulary List):

• Source Consulted: 'The top one hundred pasta sauces, 1987' is filled in for you, from the Title Proper and Date of Publication of the Manifestation

• Create and Link to a new Expression Record:
  • Go to Expression of Work
  • Right-click on the Text box (or <F5>)
  • Choose 'Create New Expression'
  • Choose the template titled 'TMQ.Text.Eng'

• Enter the attribute data for the Expression:

• Content Type: 'Text' is already filled in for you (because you used the ‘Text.Eng’ template); click on the down arrow by the side of the Text box to see the other option in the vocab for this element

• Language of Expression: 'English' is already filled in for you (because you used the ‘Text.Eng’ template); click on the down arrow by the side of the Text box to see the other option in the vocab for this element

• Date of Expression: '1987' is already filled in for you, copied from the Date of Publication from the Manifestation; my research showed that the original UK version did not have any identifying or content attributes that were different from the expression of the manifestation that you have, so this date of expression is ok for this manifestation

• Illustrative Content: choose from the open vocab (see Choose Data from a Vocabulary List):

• Colour Content : enter 'color' as free text:

• Metadata About Expression Data\Authorized Access Point: 'Seed, Diane. Top one hundred pasta sauces. Text' is already filled in for you, copied from the Authorized Access Point for the Work (“Seed, Diane. Top one hundred pasta sauces”) with Content Type (“Text”) added (to distinguish the AAP for the Expression from the AAP for the Work)

• Status of Identification (choose from the closed vocab,see Choose Data from a Vocabulary List):

• Source Consulted: 'The top one hundred pasta sauces, 1987' is filled in for you, from the Title Proper and Date of Publication of the Manifestation

• Work Expressed: is already back-linked to the Work record (as part of the Build WEM process)

• Add a link to a record for the illustrator (Budwig, Robert) as ‘Contributor’:
  • Go to the Text box for Contributor
  • Find and link to the record for Robert that is already in the sample database provided with RIMMF (Add a Link to a Related Entity)
    • Right-click on the Text box (or <F5>)
    • Choose <Link to (EI)>
    • Find Robert’s AAP and double-click it (the link is made to his record)
      • if the list is long, type the first letter of the person’s last name until you get to that name and hit <Enter>
      • You can view his record (double-click on the link) to be sure it is the correct one. If it is not, delete the link and try again (see How to Delete a Link)
      • Close Robert's record
      • Back at the Expression record, change the Contributor element to its sub-element 'Illustrator'
        • Click on the Element Label for 'Contributor'
        • Choose 'Illustrator'

• Save the Expression record that you are in (<Ctrl+S>)
• Go to the Work record:
  • using the [W] WEMI button (see WEMI Links; or
  • just double-click on the link to the Work data in the Text box at Work Expressed
• View the R-Tree for this set of records (see The R-Tree)
  • Dig down to see the Manifestation and Illustrator links
• Close the R-Tree
• Close the records
• DONE
